A GROUP of young people proved that they make ‘em tough in the Dales.

Despite torrential rain a planned outdoor session of rugby by Wensleydale Cubs still went ahead. With thick coats and hats brought out of winter storage a group of 25 young people aged 8-10 were put through their paces at Wensleydale RUFC.

Organized by cub leader Helen Sunter the visit was part of the cub’s summer sessions, the majority of which are outdoors. Club coaches led by Ian Storer split the visitors into groups: the sporty types held a game and the less-competitive ones enjoyed an obstacle course, problem-solving, team building and some fun training for everyone.

Mrs Sunter commented: “Although the weather was terrible, we all had such a great time, some of our cubs do play for the club and I think we may have interested some new recruits. I have discovered I might be a natural at passing the ball.”

The rugby club is running free Friday night touch rugby sessions throughout the summer at 6.30pm. Aimed at 7 to 11-year-olds the emphasis is on fun; it is suitable for girls and boys wishing to learn basic rugby skills. For further details contact Jim McRobert 07801564030. Wensleydale Cubs meet at 6pm on Tuesday evenings at the Scout Hall.
