Northallerton & D.M.C. Trial, Over Silton, Sunday

Heavy rain overnight caused Northallerton DMC problems on the rolling, grassy hills and tree lined slopes of their Over Silton venue, and as Clerk of Course Nigel Rooksby said "It turned out harder than intended, but in the circumstances." Conditions favoured delicate throttle control, and Mark Doughty, reliving his glory days, proved master winning ahead of Dean Tate, with club stalwart Ian Morley snatching the Class B class win and Fantic mounted Andrew Keel gaining a confidence boosting win in the opening round of the clubs Twin Shock Challenge. First section in and out over slippery roots had Tim Marrison and Bill Gamble falling over with front mudguards and never did see the end cards, along with Luke Finch and Edgar Gaines-Burrill.

Best here was Dave Bell on his Merlin with just seven lost. Doughty and Darren Johnson fived the second, only Danny Gamble and Tate on a clean sheet. Morley fought hard for his win in Class B never more so than on the slippery adverse camber of Pete Simpsons where it needed a huge effort just to reach the end cards, just six lost here, then cleaning the difficult wooded section of Bill Pye`s every lap, along with the returning - after five years - Chris Lambert on a superbly prepped little Honda.

Bedlington Motor Club unearthed a fine piece of land at Thrunton Woods near Rothbury After weeks of further work behind the scenes they put on another brilliant event last weekend, when well over 100 riders turned out for three laps of sixteen sections. Coupled with a six mile ride around some wonderful views of the area, it turned out to be one of the best trials in the North East for a long time.Tom Affleck had been riding the opening British Championship in Kent the previous day but made the 350 mile drive north worth his while with a resounding victory on the Expert Route, dropping just six marks with runner - up Cumbrian Tom Alderson and John Battensby third.

Affleck was right on form with two clean laps before dropping a five on a big step at section six, and then a final dab as he exited section thirteen.

With Colin Ward and Trevor Willans breathing down his neck all day Tony Hodgson did well to hold them both off to take the Clubman win on 14, one less than Ward and two less than Willans. In a battle of the veterans on the Easy Course, Ray Crinson got off to a decent start with a single mark first lap, lost as he rode the slippery slab in section three, while Eric McMeekin was going well until a five as he attempted the rock climb in section fourteen. Derek McBeth had fived section four, a tight right hander followed by a steep drop then a muddy hill climb, before parting with two more first lap penalties.
