A NORTH Yorkshire school was able to take advantage of an interesting place to visit on its very door step where many of their parents work.

Children from Middleham Primary School made the short walk to the nearby Mark Johnston Racing Stables the workplace to many of their mums and dads and spent the morning inspecting the facilities. The idea came about following a school project: “Where do my wellies take me?”

Teacher Rebecca Brown explained: “The children asked if they could go to China, Antarctica and the Wild West. However they also asked if they could do something locally and as many of our parents work at Mark Johnston’s or in racing we asked if we could pay a visit.”

Supervised by Assistant Trainer Jock Bennett the young visitors were shown many of the yard’s 246 horses and the newly-opened sea walker and equine pool where staff exercise their expensive thoroughbreds. The children then returned to school, all still wearing their wellingtons to capture their experiences and write thank you notes to the staff at Mark Johnston’s.
