Richmond Motor Club. Park Gate Trial, West Witton, Sunday

Richard Sadler won Park Gate Trial on Sunday but only a after a tough test of strength and stamina on would be described as a muddy ordeal.

Seventy six riders entered the event which was planned by the winner but almost a third failed to complete the three lap twelve section event.

A legacy of rain and then snow combined to jack up the scores.

Nine competitors logged well into three figure scores. Guy Kendrew and James Stones put the pressure on Sadler.

Will Reynolds returned from Australia to take the inter class award while top youth Ryan Brown maintained his victory run.

Sausage ‘king’ Paul Dennis held off heating engineer Andrew Tales.

Paul Sadler headed the clubman class while Coverdale farmer Steve Lambert wheeled out his thrity year old Yamaha to beat Chris Laws.

South Shield M.C. Caer Urfa Cup Trial, Shield Close, Weardale, Sunday

Traditionally the North East Centre’s opening trial of the new year, the South Shields Motor Club were a week behind this year for their Caer Urfa Trial, held at Shield Close in Weardale last Sunday.

Often held in freezing sconditions, this year was a lot warmer than usual which helped swell the entry to over seventy riders.

On the Expert Route, Michael Phillipson was out on an ageing Beta, and was putting together some decent rides till his bike gave up, leaving John Crinson to lead the following pack on eight.

Carl Shaw took the Clubman win ahead of Jason Scott and Stephen Bennett, his score of sixteen giving him a comfortable margin. John Bullen, on five, took the Easy Course win ahead of three riders on seven, the tie decider giving the nod to Rob Church who pipped James Harland and Mark Jewell.

All of the winner’s marks came in single dabs spread around the course, but both Church and Harland will be kicking themselves after both collecting fives on their first visit to the narrow gulley at the furthest point on the two mile venue.

Pickering & D.M.C. Easy trial, Yatt’s Farm, Newton on RawcLiffe, Sunday

The Pickering club emerged smelling of roses at Yatts Farm on Sunday wherentwenty trailers enjoyed a very low scoring four laps and eleven sections.

The weather forecast for the day over East Yorkshire was dismal and the mark out on Friday centred on what the weather men predicted.

Apart from some early rain the surfaces were snow covered and icy so four laps it was the first three sections grabbed marks but not from Andy Thorpe who got his Beta round the trees and up and down the land depression without a penalty.

Pickering will stage the next easy trial at Cawthorne Lane, Wrelton, on March 19.

Middlesbrough D.M.C. Charltons Bank Trial, Guisborough, Sunday

The entry slightly down from recent weeks for Middlesbrough trial on Sunday.

Using the old shale tips at Guisborough forty riders turned out on a mild morning and also ten observers - for a good old fashioned four lap, ten section event, inspired by Phil Perry and his crew. Sections proved tricky.

Chris Brown and Kevin Tate battled for top honours, Brown just edging Tate out for the win by one mark.

It was hard finding grip as the snow melted, but Tate, at his best in these conditions, made easy work of Dave Thompson`s difficult, adverse camber climbs, cleaning every lap, as did Sam Haywood.

Brown lost a scrappy three here when the Scorpa found more grip than expected, but fought back with a three mark advantage on the first.

Moto cross men Mark Franklin and Mike Dowson competed in Clubman A class, Franklin finishing a creditable third - Dowson a little bit further back - behind winner, the experienced Alan Carr.

Solid rides from Simon Smith, Andrew Dale and Jeremy Saffin in B class finishing in that order, just pushing Paul Nelson and Ben Hollingworth out of the results by one mark.
