FOR only the second time, the owners of the Larklands Holiday Barns complex provided the trials venue for Richmond Motor Club’s Kirby Hill Trial at Ravensworth last Saturday.

Scott Trial supporters Angela and Jack Lynas provide their farmlands for the famous event and opened the gates to their holiday park to accommodate the Richmond club’s easy trial.

Event secretary Sandra Fowler accepted 65 entries ranging from five-year-old youngsters to near-pensionable veterans.

Former TT ace Mick Grant journeyed from his Louth home to join in the fun – and win his class. He also finished second overall to Londonderry teenager Guy Stones.

Only two routes were marked for the adult and small wheels classes. The latter class had to deal with seven slippery sections, while the adults and youths competed on a full four-lap, 10-section route. Despite the heavy conditions, only eight retirements were posted.

Andrew Swainston and Pete Hill marked both courses, while Katie Astwood stepped in to control the 13 small wheels contestants.

The electric bikes were difficult to control with their narrow section tyres on the muddy surfaces. Rory Wilkinson, Bailey Huntbach and Barnaby Fothergill were the boys with the strong legs and Lily-Ann Thwaite the most determined riding her Oset.

The sixth section decided the results. Every rider lost marks here, with Harry Wills, Stones, Mark Snowball and Grant the best on single penalties.

Richmond run again on Boxing Day at the Woodyard, Reeth.

ANDY Chilton rode his Scorpa to victory at Hull AC's Embro Cup trial at Harwood Dale last Sunday with a loss of just nine marks over the three-lap, 12-section course set by Roy Jarvis and helpers.

The 100 entries included a great crop of expert and inter riders.

It was a bright morning, but greasy conditions gave warning marks would fall. It also brought some old faces out of retirement, such as Steve Hind, Stephen Suddes and Simon Pickard.

Chilton looked in fantastic form from the start, with only Ian Austermuhle, Adam Milner and Chris Alford poking the front wheel over the top each visit. Runner-up Rob Waite, putting in a solid ride, was next best on five, followed by Milner on seven.

The rocks at Foundations kept observer Willie Wood busy, only inter winner Pete Sharp and Callum Williamson remaining clean.

Scarborough veteran Alan Carr topped the clubman A class, also proving best on the hill, where two marks went astray.

Brendan Todd was next on three, with Louise Alford and Andrew Gibson on four.

Nikita Smith, confidence returning, was the only A class rider to clean the 10th every time and grabbed a hard-earned third place.

There was a great battle for B class honours between Richard Hildrick, Mike Kendra, Colin Bailey and Paul Nelson, who finished in that order. Nelson blew the win on the easy eighth with a five. John Bullen made his bid for fame on the hill, best on the new Vertigo with three lost.

CONDITIONS at Yatt’s Farm last Sunday belied weeks of rain. Pickering and District MC heeded comments about some sections being tricky and did something about it for their easy trial at Newton.

Eleven sections were flagged and simplified. It seemed to work, especially for trial first-timer Jack Angel, who won on just five marks. He beat some regular Pickering winners.

The sixth section featured different levels to climb and descend and did take marks, as did the remains of the old wall at section 10, but Angel won on five dabs, ahead of regular winner Andy Thorpe, with Sam Wadsworth and Mark Snowball right on their tracks.

Pickering will run again at Yatt’s Farm on January 15.
