THE Eric Ridley Trophy Trial was no walk in the park at Hurst last Sunday, when Faceby's Guy Kendrew was just about walking on water as he took his friends and rivals Richard Sadler and James Stones to the proverbial cleaners.

Kendrew has won the majority of Richmond Motor Club trials this year, with only the Reeth Three-Day event eluding him.

He only stopped once, in section three, where observer Allan Lovell watched only James Stones, Kendrew and inter winner Matt Maynard haul their machines through the section. They at least matched the three-mark scores of Kendrew.

Richard Proudlock took the fourth section, where only the winner kept his machine moving forward.

Clerk of course Paul Terry certainly laid on a tough trial for the 75 contenders. Carlton's Maynard has the luxury of long legs and that just gave him the skills to keep ahead of Mark Willis and win the inter class.

Youth Tom Needham won class A, albeit well into a three-figure score, but he took the hard route and succeeded.

Paul Sadler lost out on a clubman tie-breaker to Andy Kearton, who rode one section more without loss than his rival, while Mark Proudlock headed Booze farmer Robert Stones and Steve Watling in the over-40s.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE'S Jack Peace continued his impressive form last Sunday, winning Scarborough and District MC's Jacky Baxter trial at Low North Park, Harwood Dale, from AM Beta rider Simon Kershaw.

A fantastic entry of almost 100 riders tackled the three-lap, 12-section course, but only Peace and Kershaw contested the expert route.

Peace was outstanding, a study in concentration at every section, never losing a mark until the treacherous, slippery climb out of the river on five, where Pete Race observed. It caught him for fives on his next two visits and two more went astray on the huge rocks of 12.

Kershaw lost a couple on the slabs of the second, but then stopped on the logs and rocks of Harold Wilson's section to drop off the pace.

Good rides came from Mike Noble, Mark Taylor and Danny Gamble, the only riders on the A route to remain clean.

Russ Rooksby shrugged off all challengers with a remarkable ride, with only the second and third river hazards taking marks off him.

Shane Monkman put a solid ride together, finishing runner-up and holding off the returning Stevie Hind, who suffered a loss of 11 on the second section.

Noble and Darren Johnson had a great battle for A class honours, but Noble rode out of his skin to top the class, losing just one mark at Rivers Meet. Johnson lost six here and a couple of nervy ones on the first.

Glaisdale's Paul Nelson continues to dominate the Bs, but Guisborough man Martin Dennis pushed hard and rode well to capture second place, holding off a host of experienced riders such as Dave Teasdale, Simon Smith and Jamie Thompson.

LAMBSHIELDS, near Edmundbyers in County Durham, remains one of the best courses in the North-East and the event held there last Sunday drew a healthy 82 entries for the Castleside Trials Club.

Eight riders went for the expert course, which didn't cause much bother for winner Michael Phillipson, who parted with just three marks over the two laps of 20 sections.

Phil Baxter headed the also-rans on 25, 10 of which went in section four, which took one of the winner's marks.

Scott Aitkin did well here with a pair of singles, but he was struggling on the previous sub with a three and a one.

Carl Shaw continued his winning ways on the clubman route with a four-mark victory over Stephen Bennett, who had a one-mark advantage over Eddie Aitkin, who lost his chance with a five in the very first section of the day.

Another suffering a costly five was Stephen Turnbull, riding the easy course, whose five on his second visit to section eight put him three marks behind winner Paul Westgarth. Four of Westgarth's total of seven went in the last section of the day in the old quarry workings.

On the conducted route, Cameron Brunskill and Joe Younghusband took their respective classes on 31 and 35 respectively.
