BETA rider Tom Hick became one of the few triple winners of the East Yorkshire Centre Two-Day Trial last weekend.

His first victory came as a youngster in 2003, he mastered the trial again in 2006 and this year produced a fantastic ride to record a clean scorecard over 50 miles and 70 sections.

He held off a strong challenge from the present crop of young guns in Olly Kendra, last year's winner Matt Maynard and Michael Todd.

Hick also produced a very fine winner's speech at the awards ceremony, thanking people past and present who do so much to make the event work.

Starting from the Flask Inn, an entry of 112 riders from all parts of the country hit a glorious Saturday morning and early riders caught the worst of the greasy rocks and streams.

At Low Moor, Thirsk's Ruth Hindmarsh took charge and settled the riders in, with only the odd mark going astray for Paul Hunter and Will Watson, although Danny Wilford and Mick Tanton fived.

The second group at Rigg Hall had riders contending with the difficult 11th, where Trevor Jones observed. Many clean sheets ended here.

No sting in the tail at Hollins Gill this year, but Russ Rooksby lost his second mark on the last section and Steve Williams added two here.

More than 20 riders finished the day in single figures and would sleep easy, dreaming of a place in the top three. The three riders unpenalised were Hick, Maynard and Kendra.

Sunday dawned with good weather. Hick, Rooksby and Kendra began well, cleaning their first card. Todd started a little nervously, with one on the first, with Maynard hanging on until one went on the rocky climb in the Raven Gill group.

Ian Hopley hit trouble on the second at Hollins Gill with a five, then a couple went astray at Raven Gill and Top Rocks at Harwood Dale.

Refreshed after lunch at Low North Park, Hick kept a cool head under intense pressure and never looked like losing a mark, levelling the rest to remain on zero. But Maynard, Kendra and Todd began to wobble a bit. Todd lost one at Castle Beck, then a five destroyed his chance at Helwith. Kendra and Maynard escaped here with threes and it was enough for them to claim runner-up and third place respectively in front of Todd.

British trials champion James Dabill, from Cookridge, ended the R T Keedwell ACU British Championship series with a double victory near Edinburgh last Sunday.

The Team Vertigo member has won 10 of the 12 trials this season, while Denby Dale JST Gas Gas teamster Jack Price has been the rider to pressure Dabill with nine visits to the rostrum. Dabill went down once, to Ipswich Beta rider Jack Sheppard.

Shrewsbury’s Tom Minta took the expert class from Birstall motorcycle instructor Dan Thorpe and Scarborough’s Tom Affleck. Minta changed to JST Gas Gas mid-season and delivered top results in the final five trials.

Richard Sadler missed six events and still took fifth place in the final standings, just ahead of his Richmond club colleague James Stones, whose cousin Jack was placed eighth.

Bradford’s Keiran Child finished runner-up to Kirkbymoorside world youth champion Jack Peace. He was on the rostrum in all events and won the final trial on Sunday.
