THERE was a dramatic conclusion to the handicap hurdle at Sedgefield on Tuesday when Colm McCormack stole all the plaudits when winning on Fiddler's Flight.

McCormack looked booked for third place when the horse made a bad error at the final flight, forcing the jockey to lose both his stirrup irons.

However, the Irishman somehow got his mount rolling again and got up close to home, leaving the rider to say: "That's great. He can be a sketchy jumper, so I just wanted to pop the last, but he got it all wrong and my saddle went."

The winner is trained by John Norton, who said: "That was a brilliant ride. It just shows what a good jockey Colm is. I'm surprised he doesn't get a lot more rides."

On the Flat, Karl Burke has made a bright start to 2016 and he bagged a big prize at Lingfield last Saturday with Rivellino in the Listed Cleve Stakes.

It was a landmark success for jockey Dougie Costello, who has now gone full time on the Flat after a successful time over jumps. He said: "Karl freshened Rivellino up after his last run and he was well in himself. He got a good tow round and he likes it here."

Looking ahead to Cheltenham, Micky Hammond is not afraid to take on the big boys with Just Cameron in the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham next month.

The Middleham trainer believes the nine-year-old will be no forlorn hope in the two-mile showpiece, especially if he repeats the form he showed last spring.

Just Cameron was only beaten three lengths by Un De Sceaux in the Grade One Ryanair Novice Chase at Punchestown. The winner, trained by Willie Mullins, is odds-on at around 4-6 to follow up his victory in the Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham last year.

Speaking after Auldthunder had give the stable another winner at Catterick last Friday, Hammond said: "He (Just Cameron) ran really well at Doncaster. We are aiming him at the two-mile Champion Chase rather than the Grand Annual.

"Last spring he improved from race to race. He will be a big price, but he can run a big race and give his owners a fun day out."

While Just Cameron is hoping to make it to Cheltenham, news broke earlier in the week that JLT favourite Killultagh Vic has been ruled out of the Cheltenham Festival and probably the rest of the season.

The seven-year-old, trained by Willie Mullins, won the Grade 2 "Money Back On Fallers" At Coral.IE Novice Chase at Leopardstown last month in extraordinary circumstances, Ruby Walsh somehow getting him back up to win after what looked like a costly error at the final fence.

Speaking on Wednesday evening, the trainer said: "He seemed fine after Leopardstown, but when we stepped up his work we discovered a suspensory problem. We don't know whether what happened at Leopardstown caused the injury or whether it was something that happened since.

"Unfortunately, he's out of Cheltenham and it's unlikely that he will run again this season."

Wetherby, which missed its two-day Christmas meeting, races this afternoon and, while the ground will be testing, the weather is on side and the first of seven races is due underway at 1.20pm.
