MALTON’S Ian Austermuhle won the National Reeth Three-Day Trial, organised by Richmond Motor Club, after a tense battle with Richard Sadler and Guy Kendrew, who led the 240 competitors on Friday on a single penalty.

After a total of 93 sections, the final result was decided after a tiebreaker rule in favour of Austermuhle. Both riders incurred 11 penalties, but Sadler dropped three penalties on Saturday, one more than Austermuhle.

The first stage of the Auto Cycle Union’s tiebreaker ruling is how many sections are ridden without penalty. Sadler rode 88 and Austermuhle 89.

Askrigg motor engineer Philip Alderson headed the clubman class from former Welsh champion Phil Houghton and West Leeds MC member Nigel Crowther.

The trial routes were different on each day, as was the starting order. The Friday route took in Hurst and Kexwith Moor, while Saturday brought in Scott Trial favourite Whaw Bridge, Kexwith Moor and Hurst Moor.

After an evening of revelry on Friday in the marquee at Parks Field, the Richmond Motor Club hosted landowners and sponsors at a buffet supper in the marquee, where Anne and Claire Sunter created the meals.

That perfect performance at the ten-section, four-lap hillside venue won him the hard course class overall from Bevan Blacker and Dave Mawer. Bevan won the novice class, while Dave was the only inter grade competitor.

Silsden’s Tim Woodhead was also a solo runner as an expert, while Joe Faunthorpe ran off with the youth category. Wetherby will run another Crooks Trophy event at Clockensyke Farm, Dacre, on August 8.

THERE was no disputing the winner of Hull AC's Alvin Harrison Ryedale Burner Trophy Trial at Helmsley on Sunday as 23-year-old Beta rider Andy Chilton, who remained unpenalised.

An entry of 60 riders rode a course set by Mark Williamson and Lewis Woodall. Clubman B joint winners Brian Johnson and Colin Bailey matched Chilton's clean ride, while Youth A winner Jack Peace became Chilton’s nearest challenger as the Blacker brothers, Bevan and Aldis, dropped off the pace.

Alan Williams had the Clubman A win in his grasp, only to five the eighth and last lap, leaving the consistent Mark Shearer to win by one mark, and in Clubman B Mark Jewell almost made the clean sheet to join the three winners, but one lost on the ninth meant he was runner-up.
