ROB Waite overcame the weather and talented rival Guy Kendrew at wet and windy Reels Head, Marske, on Sunday, when 39 riders contested the Darlington and District Motor Club’s open trial.

Only four experts graced the hard route through eight sections – Waite, Kendrew, York’s Tom Hick and West Witton star Richard Sadler.

Graham Sanderson’s game plan was ten sections, but a shortage of observers reduced it to nine and it became eight after an observer card was run over by a competitor and rendered unreadable.

It was one of those days on Reels Head, famed Scott Trial section area and not the place to be when the weather is on the inclement side of bad.

Russell and Nathan Cannell took the inter and novice classes, while young Thomas Coates warmed up for Sunday’s Mintex national trial by winning youth class A from Jack Walker.

Inclement weather does not trouble Roger Williams at all. The gas rig technician is surrounded by water every working day and he won the green course class with ease.

While Richard Sadler reflected on the five marks he lost, his father Paul was making hay on the easy course, losing one mark less than Richard.

Darlington play again at Oxnop Gill, Gunnerside, on July 12. Check with the club before the day.

THE third trial in the Acklams Beta summer series headed for the menacing gloom of the dense woodland at West Hill Edge, on Galphay Moor, where 106 contenders in 12 classes rode a main course of ten sections and three laps.

Ten small-wheelers tackled a short five-section, four-lap separate course under the supervision of Adam Blacker and Nigel Simpson.

Even after chasing the small wheels pilots, Simpson had enough energy in reserve to ride his twin-shock Ossa and win his class, beating Michael Platts and his pristine TLR Honda, while young Jack Harker exploited the handling and power of a vintage Suzuki.

Monte Andrews, one half of the Ravensthorpe brothers, excelled on the hard route over Ben Green and little brother Conrad.

Imogen Laws won the easy class despite diving off her Gas Gas. She just got back on and continued.

The main event was a Keith Blythe and company effort. The brothers Blacka, Bevan and Aldis ruled the hard route novice class, while Ilkley heating engineer Andy Tales could not turn the heat on as he was giving his Fantic a night out in the woods.

Phillip Hammond won the oldies from Peter Brown, but was a bit lost without Rob Hardisty on hand to confuse him. He even cast away his MRS Sherco at the feet of Harold Wilson, who promptly awarded him a five.

The youth entry on the main course was excellent, with 29 youngsters in three classes plus the small wheels contingent. The next Acklams Beta party will be staged at White Wood Farm, Bewerley, where the hillside course always throws up some surprises. The date is June 27, with a 3pm and 5pm start schedule.
