IT'S A very exciting time for Michael Dods and his team as they've a potential superstar on their hands in the shape of Mecca's Angel, who took another step forward when she ran away with the Prix de Saint-Georges at Longchamp last Sunday.

Ridden by Paul Mulrennan, Mecca's Angel raced at the front with Hot Streak before bursting clear about two furlongs out.

Robert La Diable grabbed second from Hot Streak, who held off Maarek to fill out the places.

Mecca's Angel was winning her second Group-level race, having won a Group 3 on her previous run at Newbury last September.

The King's Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot looks the obvious next race, although quick ground could be a concern.

Dods said: "She is a very good filly and has been working tremendously. We had her in the Palace House Stakes but took her out because it was too firm.

"I've half trained her light because I wasn't sure we would run so I'm sure there's more to come. She's in the King's Stand but she wouldn't run with firm in the description."

A quality three days of racing at York got underway on Wednesday and Star Of Seville survived the late rally of Together Forever to stake her claim for the Investec Oaks in the Tatteralls Musidora Stakes.

The 4/6 favourite was sent to the front from the start by Frankie Dettori and quickened clear of the field when pushed along two furlongs out.

She looked to have put the race to bed at the furlong-pole, but the John Gosden trained filly started to idle and edge left and Ryan Moore sensed an opportunity was about to appear on the runner-up.

Asking her to go and catch the leader, Together Forever made rapid inroads into Star Of Seville's advantage, but no sooner had she nearly drawn alongside the leader, Star of Seville sensed that the race was on again and just picked up again in the final strides to to score by a head.

Pandora ran a solid race for third, a further two and three-quarter lengths adrift.

Interestingly, both the winner and the runner-up are available to back at 8/1 with Sky Bet for the Oaks, the bookmakers presumably taking note of the fact that the runner-up was giving 4lb to Star Of Seville.

However, Dettori was notably upbeat about his mount's Epsom prospects, saying: "For some reason, she seemed to just want wait for them to catch her up at the furlong-pole before she went on again.

"I really like her and the thing is you don't know how much more there is the tank. The feeling she gives you is that there is more to come and she's a well-balanced filly with a good attitude and I don't think Epsom will be any problem at all."

Gosden added: "Frankie said she was just waiting in front. That was a Group One filly coming at her. Luckily, when she got there she started going again. It is a long time to be in front for an inexperienced filly.

"She has gone from a maiden to a conditions race to winning a Group Three Musidora, so things are very positive.

"This is a nice filly, but she is still learning. She was a long time in front, but Ryan (Moore) is a master at timing his run to catch you late on.

"She had more up her sleeve if needed. We wanted an even pace, which is why we made the running.

"I don't think Epsom will be a problem, as she is a well-balanced filly. The second is a Group One winner by Galileo and is no mug.

"We might go to the Breakfast With The Stars event (at Epsom), which will give us something to talk about over baked beans."

Staying at York, Kevin Ryan has a smart juvenile on his hands with Areen who made a winning debut in the novice race.

"Jamie's (Spencer) given him a great ride because even though that was a race he doesn't know he's had one," said Ryan.

"I wanted to give him another run but he doesn't need one after that and it will be straight to the Norfolk now. He's very good."

In the concluding handicap Libran defied a penalty for his recent Beverley success, winning again with something in hand.

The Alan Swinbank-trained gelding had won over ten furlongs at Beverley, but handled just his second try at a mile and a half to beat Pressure Point by a length.

Swinbank said of the 13-2 winner: "He went up 10lb, so he was well in really. We could look at Ascot, but the Old Newton Cup might suit."

Another busy weekend of sport coming up including a competitive card at Thirsk tomorrow afternoon.
