KISUMU,

Wednesday.

A BRITISH detective whose evidence is expected to shed light on last

year's murder of a senior Kenyan politician was in a secret location in

the west of the country today, waiting to appear at an inquiry.

President Daniel arap Moi called in British detectives after Foreign

Minister Robert Ouko's body was found mutilated and charred near his

home in western Kenya soon after he called for an investigation into

high-level corruption.

His murder in February 1990 triggered a political crisis for Moi's

Government after a police report suggested the death may have been

suicide. Anti-Government riots followed.

A Kenyan official said today that recently-retired Scotland Yard

officer John Troon was ''hidden until he is ready to appear before the

commission of inquiry''.

Mr Troon's report, which took seven months to compile, has never been

made public.--Reuter.
