BIRMINGHAM City manager Trevor Francis last night revealed he is anxiously hanging by the telephone, waiting for a call from Ally McCoist.
The Rangers striker will leave Ibrox on loan after tomorrow's Old Firm match at Parkhead and his former team-mate is desperate to grab his signature.
Said Francis: ''Over the last few days there have been a number of clubs linked with Ally.
''I phoned Walter Smith to find out the exact situation and he's let Ally know I'm very interested.
''He did point out that quite a few clubs have been in contact regarding Ally, but that is understandable. ''I gave my home number to pass on to Ally and I expect to hear from him within the next 48 hours.''
Francis knows he will face a fight to land McCoist, with Newcastle, Fulham, and Sunderland the front-runners in the chase.
He said: ''Managing to capture a player such as Ally for no transfer fee is very appealing and it is no surprise that so many clubs are interested. He's a recognised goalscorer with a fantastic record.
''I must admit I'm not over optimistic at the moment because I haven't yet spoken to Ally and don't know his thoughts.
''However, once I've spoken to him I'll get a better idea.''
qDUNDEE United captain Dave Bowman could be back for the New Firm derby with Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Saturday - after overcoming a new injury scare.
The former Scotland midfield man made his return in the reserve game against Rangers at Tannadice on Tuesday after being out for three weeks with kidney damage.
He picked up that injury during the premier division match with Hearts on December 9, and early in the reserve game there were fears he might have done exactly the same again.
Bowman was left holding his back after a clash with Ibrox defender and former Tannadice team-mate Gary Bollan.
United manager Tommy McLean said: ''It was an anxious moment, but Dave was able to recover and complete the 90 minutes which was a relief. Now it is likely he will be back in the squad for Pittodrie.''
Meanwhile, Tannadice keeper Andy Stewart is set to join East Fife for a three-month loan period after being involved earlier this season in a similar arrangement with Partick Thistle.
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
