MASHAM Sausages managing director Paul Dennis won the Dick Horner Memorial Trial at Parkgate, Wensley, on Sunday from Skeeby’s Allan Richardson and Norton gas rig technician Roger Williams.

Paul was one of two winners who were technically speaking ‘walking wounded'. He was having his first competitive trial ride since undergoing a knee joint operation.

Paul Dennis won the 30-strong class by a single penalty from Richardson with Williams right on hand to strike if the leaders faltered in the dense wood at Parkgate, where traction was the key factor. Thirty-three adult riders, plus four youths, contended the AGB course. Thomas Coates was the best of four youths.

West Witton builder Paul Sadler headed the clubman class in his first ride since having a hip joint replacement. Catterick Village rider Chris Laws lost the class when he put a boot down in the opening section. That first penalty almost certainly handed Sadler the victory.

Askrigg’s Robyn Alderson did well to grab fifth place behind Andy Kearton and Joe Alderson. That left a further 35 riders considering where they went wrong.

One third of the Over 40’s dropped out but not marl Simpson who won from Jim Hudson and Mark Whelan. Andre Brown wheeled out a tidy Fantic to beat Steve Watling in the Twin Shock class after five rivals cried enough. Over half the Class B/C and D contenders dropped out.

Silsden national youth champion Josh McParland won his class riding his 50cc Beta machine as did Ripon’s Harry Mugridge. Tom Constantine, Andrew Reynolds, McParland and Mugridge were the boys with the will to succeed, and strong legs, who won their respective classes.

The entry soared to a mighty 144 competitors in a total of ten classes. Stephen Lambert planned and marked the three-lap 12-section course with sections in Agglethorpe Quarry and deep into the steep woodland below the quarry workings. Richmond stalwart Barry Watson manned the opening section in the limestone quarry. At least Watty was tucked away under the overhang of rocks.

The second was nearby and did settle down after a few wheels had cleaned off the slime and shifted some loose stones. The fourth section, there were ten through the narrow gate into the wood, really decided many of the final positions. It was a severe climb up through the trees in a narrow gully which progressively became a major hazard. Ted Harston masterminded the small wheels classes. Two were marked in the quarry and further three in the top of the wood. The fifth was a traverse of two fallen trees and that kept ther minders on their toes.

FACEBY'S Guy Kendrew and James Carr, from Scarborough, could not be split on Sunday at Guisborough DMC`s trial at Slapewath.

After four laps of ten sections, the pair remained clean to finish joint winners. A tough season lies ahead for Guy, remarking after the event: "I enjoyed it today. It was a little bit easier than expected, but it does help to up your level of concentration, so it was good practice for the season ahead".

Guy will defend his British Expert Trials Championship crown of 2014. Simon Winfield, formerly of Guisborough – he now resides at Hartlepool –sneaked in to win the Intermediate class on most cleans rule from Shane Monkman with Scarborough`s Mark Taylor third. Winfield shook off the effects of a bad crash on the rock step of seven and actually nailed it last lap with a superb clean and Phil Manton, from Middlesbrough, Yarm contender John Bullen and Mark Jewell from Guisborough shared top award in Clubman B Class, all remaining unpenalised.

NORTH-EAST riders headed to the far north of their centre last weekend when the Tweed Valley Club put on their trial at Doddington Quarry just above the town of Wooler, where 57 riders turned out, including five on the conducted course.

It was a two-horse race in the Expert Class where Colin Ward edged out Scott Fenton by three marks, after they both finished well ahead of the rest of the entry.

On the Clubman Route John Scott finished his day on six, four less than runner-up Darren Palmer, himself a further four better off than Russell Hodgson. It was close on the Easy Course where just one mark separated winner Gary Bloodworth, on eight, and John Palmer, who was two marks less than Adrian Gallon. On the Conducted Course, B class rider Alyssa Baxter aboard her Sherco, was comfortably ahead of the four Osets, lead home by A Baxter, followed by Ella and Rhys Hodgson with R Hodgson completing the list.
