Scarborough D.M.C. Open Yuletide Trial, Low North Park, Sunday

As the old year draws to a close, Simon Winfield earned a festive season win, topping the expert class by just three marks from Michael Todd at Scarborough DMC`s Yule Tide trial at Low North Park on Sunday.

Held around the old army camp on a fantastic frosty morning, Fent Howell and crew plotted a three lap, ten section course for Hard, Easy and Very Easy, severity spot on for all classes.

The rocky first took the odd mark from clubmen as it polished up. It also caught Winfield for two, the Gas Gas nose diving into rocks, but he recovered well, Todd needed one.

Only the two Rob`s, McClaughlan and Carter stayed clean. Todd suffered at The Foundations - possibly losing the trial here - on nine lost, Winfield kept it steady on one, impressive clean rides from Paul Carter, Andy Lockwood and McClaughlan.

Clubmen were building up a nice head of steam - noticeable in the sharp, frosty air - on reaching the series of slippery rock steps of eight, but solid clean rides came from Stewart Dixon and Ian Harrison - out on his Christmas present, a Beta - then Todd levelled the expert route in spectacular style every lap the only rider to do so.

Winfield just could not suss this one and suffered with twelve lost. Martin Pratt just edged out Dixon for Easy Course win with Scarborough Club stalwart Trev Jones on his affectionately named `Ruffmutt` James third and Lewis Woodall pulled off a great win to receive his share of the limelight with a very consistent ride to take Easy Course win from Mark Wray on furthest clean rule and Shaun Trotter just one mark away, two marks lost on the very last costing him dear.

Eboracum M.C.C. Annual Luxembourg Trophy Trial Hovingham Old Quarry, New Years Day

Beta rider Ian Austermuhle started 2015 in the best possible way by winning the Eboracum Motor Club`s Luxembourg trial at Hovingham Quarries on Sunday.

A four lap, ten section course plotted by Billy Kendra brought a huge entry of 99 riders to this compact little venue all keen to ride. Early sections didn`t bother the top men. In fact, none bothered Austermuhle as he reeled off the the sections.

It was left to Ollie Kendra and Tom Hick to pressurize after Aldis Blacker failed section five and Tom Alderson hit trouble on the manmade earth mover tyre`s where Keith Ellis observed with ten lost. But Kendra`s chance slipped away on the rocks of five.

Desperately trying to recover a lost cause, he hopped the Gas Gas outside the line of flags and into failure. Hick`s two marks on sections two and seven left him third behind Kendra.

A great battle ensued for the Intermediate class laurels.

Mark Harrison against youthful Shane Monkman. Experience won the day, just. Harrison edged it on most sections ridden without penalty rule from Monkman, whose dab on the first possibly lost him the win on most cleans rule. York`s Mark Coulson hung on to win Clubman A class from Fantic mounted Joe Clements.

Section five proved a real mark taker, only three riders remained clean on this one, David Coulson, Matt Sharp and Ripon`s James Langstaff. Top spot in Clubman B was taken by Mark Summer, his second win in as many weeks, but it was a shared victory as Paul Pulman, Jonathon Draper and Martin Peirson all matched him.

The jovial Andy Wheatley would explain to son Paul on his way home how he managed to win the Over 50`s class from such riders as Stewart Wainwright, Mike Kendra and Neil Holcombe. Good ride from the Guisborough man.

Stanley Motor Club, New Years Day Trial

Forty four riders said yes to a New Years Days Trial, as they turned up for a fun day type event held by the Stanley Motor Club.

Probably the furthest travelled competitor was Tom Affleck and his trip was made worthwhile after a narrow victory on the Expert Route, the tie decider giving him the win after both he and Colin Ward went round on one.

Dale Watkin got the better of Travis Ward on the Green Course by a margin of three marks, all the winner's marks dropped in section four.

Twin shock mounted Richard Hawes had a comfortable margin over Colin Ward on the Clubman Route, with Hawes clean sheet in section four making all the difference.

On the Easy Course, Brian Ridley dropped just the one and that was enough to give him victory ahead of Steve Vitty and Rob Lowery.
