BOXING DAY is cold and frosty at the Woodyard venue on the outskirts of Reeth, but unlike last year when it was crystal clear and wall to wall sunshine there was a hint of rain in the overcast skies.

Nigel Cummins plotted a two-lap 15-section course and marked three routes, with a green course class riding certain selected sections on the hard route, to be completed in 4.5 hours. As is usual with this club there were several helpers and Low Row official Andrew Brown was seen rushing off on his bike with a large bag of flags on his back.

Richard Sadler was among the entry list keen to advance on his win at Ripon on his new Beta UK machine, but Guy Kendrew was over from Faceby to keep him on the ball. Also Gas Gas teamster Dan Thorpe was looking to get a last win for 2014. Any over-indulgence in Xmas fare may affect the outcome in the results. The Albert Shaw Trial is not forgiving in any way. The 104 riders found out after two brisk laps of 15 sections.

Ted Harston was in command of the small wheel brigade, all 18 of them, in all shapes and sizes. The action for the boys and girls was adjacent to the Arkle Beck near the start where Mr Harston and his assistants (read parents) plotted testing ten sections ridden four times.

The main course, run clockwise, started across the start field by the barn with three sections on the banks of the Arkle then over to the wall for a further two rocky climbs. The dense steep wood was not included this year much to the relief of most. The climb up to behind the White House had several riders struggling many arriving out of sorts at the 13th in the legendary Rock Garden. Many Scott Survivors were glad to see and get through the loft landmark.Tim Willis arrived here on his twin shock Bultaco sporting a brand new pair of "Dickies" overalls, a Xmas present perhaps.

Will Reynolds had adorned his with a bright seasonal jumper as had his riding mate James Stones.

BETA rider Andy Chilton from Whitby finished a successful 2014 season with a flourish at Guisborough DMC's Fancy Dress Trial at Charlton's, near Guisborough, with an unpenalised ride around the old shale tips, beating Sherco mounted Tom Affleck by one.

And matching Affleck was Youth A winner Gas Gas rider Jack Peace on one penalty. The emphasis of this Phil Teasdale-inspired course was to enjoy a fun day. It worked brilliantly, scores for each class proving this.

Affleck's one went on the tricky concrete pipes of the first hazard and Dan Peace's chance of the win slipped by when hitting a flag on the seventh, dropping him to third. Dan Ferguson just edged out Simon Winfield for Best Inter award by two marks after Winfield lost five on the fourth section and Thornaby's James Thompson, now moving up the results, kept it together to win a tight Clubman B class – winning on furthest clean rule – from Andrew Dale, as in form Rick Jackson, Fantic mounted, pushed Chris Banks into fourth position. George McGee did a great job with a conducted trial for the youngsters. Niamh Watson winning from Ollie Carne and John and Ryan Jackson.

The compact course meant that Fancy Dress winner Stuart Tate's Paddington Bear had time to make everyone a Marmalade sandwich. And this he did, opening his little attache case to reveal bread, butter and marmalade – well, what else for Paddington.

Snow and icy roads axe Wetherby trial at Greenhow.

The Wetherby Bottle Trial was cancelled late on Saturday. The event was due to take place on Sunday, December 28th at Cockhill Mines, Greenhow. Snow and icebound roads are the reason for late cancellation.
