DARLINGTON captain Gary Brown is still getting to grips with his new role having been moved to right-back this season, though he has revealed it’s a position he played in for the club a decade ago.

With Alan White and Chris Hunter having become the favoured pairing at centre-back, Brown is being used at full-back and he was involved in the first goal in Saturday’s2-0 win at Prescot Cables.

His cross was headed to Leon Scott who volleyed home from the edge of the penalty area, though Brown believes he is still adjusting to play at right-back.

However, the whole-hearted defender was in the club’s youth set-up as a teenager and he said: “I played right-back when I was at Darlo when I was 14 and I’ve had that versatile label since then. I played right and left-back at Blyth, right-back at Durham and in midfield a bit, but I feel more comfortable here because of the information I’m getting off the coaching staff and Martin Gray.

“They’re always coaching, planting little seeds in your head. They can’t be too literal and telling you what to do every time you get the ball, but they give you scenarios and I’ve worked on them.

“As long as I’m playing, that’s how I see it. I’ve done a few things off the pitch which I’m not prepared to talk about and it’s working now. In the last two games there’s been a big improvement in myself and in my confidence in playing the position.

“I’ve been linking up well with Adam Mitchell on the right and we’ve had a lot more width.

“I still think my best position is centre-back, but I’m loving it at right-back. I’m getting forward and I’m starting to improve, shall we say.

“I’ve scored two this season and set three up, so that’s not a bad impact.”

Saturday’s victory was Quakers’ fifth in a row, their form improving after overcoming a disappointing spell that saw the team fail to win six successive league and cup games.

Brown added: “Every season has been the same. We seem to start on fire, then have a poor month and then put run of results together. Hopefully that’s what’s happening now, that’s five wins in a row and a winnable home game to come on Wednesday.

“It’s nice to be top of the table and it would be great to stay there. I know a lot of teams have got games in hand. But we had that experience in the Northern League and we proved then that you’re better off having points on the board than fixtures in the book.

“We’ve just go to try and keep beating what’s in front of us.”
