Referee: James Adcock (Long Eaton) – Didn’t really have a contentious decision to make, although the home fans clearly thought his first-half decisions favoured Boro 6

Attendance: 4,311

Entertainment: ****

Oldham (4-4-2) Rachubka 4; B Wilson 4, Dieng 5, Elokobi 3, J Wilson 5; Philliskirk 4, Kelly 4, Mellor 3 (Winchester 46, 5), Mills 4 (Brown 75); CLARKE-HARRIS 5, Gros 4 (Dayton 46, 4).

Middlesbrough (4-2-3-1):

Konstantopoulos: Hardly had a save to make all evening, but was quick off his line to deal with a couple of potentially dangerous situations 7

Hines: Looked more comfortable than he had appeared at the weekend and dominated his opponent throughout 7

Woodgate: Slotted in seamlessly at the heart of the back four and even went close to scoring with an early header 8

Ayala: Another dominant display from the athletic centre-half whose aerial ability is a key part of his game 7

Husband: Enjoyed his first appearance in a Boro shirt and looked composed and comfortable in possession 7

LEADBITTER: Ran the game from his position at the base of midfield and dispatched a clinical striker to claim Boro’s second goal 8

Whitehead: Held his position diligently, but needlessly conceded possession with the occasional sloppy pass 6

Nsue: Made a couple of decent breaks down the right-hand side, but drifted in and out of the game for lengthy spells 6

L Williams: Always looked to make himself available for the ball, and broke the deadlock with a sensational long-range strike 7

Reach: Created a succession of problems with his breaks down the left-hand side and set up Leadbitter’s goal with an intelligent pull-back 8

Fewster: His work-rate and commitment couldn’t be questioned, but his lack of physical strength meant he struggled to make an impression 5

Subs: Kike (for Reach, 57): Doubled his tally with a crisp finish off the base of the post and already looks an excellent summer addition 7

Smallwood (for Whitehead, 70): Ensured Boro would not lose any of their solidity in the final 20 minutes of the game 6

Adomah (for Fewster, 74)

(not used): Mejias (gk), Bennett, Omeruo, Tomlin.
