A CHARITY race through Wensleydale saw a good turnout of runners from throughout the country and benefited from temperatures being several degrees lower than the heat of previous days.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Wensleydale under UK Athletics rules, the 14-kilometre James Herriot Country Trail Run saw 246 runners register to race with 218 taking part on the day.

Run over moorland tracks and paths, the race started at Castle Bolton and despite the slightly cooler temperatures, an additional water station added was well used.

No records were broken this year, but Julie Briscoe, of Wakefield Harriers, came within seven seconds of breaking the ladies’ record when she finished 1st female and 4th overall in 58 minutes 23 seconds.

Fastest overall was last year’s winner Mike Jefferies, of Grinton and Billingham Marsh House, in 54 minutes 48 seconds, 70 seconds faster than previously.

Runner-up was Tony Lambert, of Carperby and Swaledale Road Runners and the second female home was Heidi Dent, from Kirkby Stephen.

Swaledale Road Runners won the men’s team race for the second year running with London Frontrunners winning the ladies team race, and Howgill Harriers taking the mixed team trophy on their first visit.

Dr Chris Wheatley, who helps organise the race, said: “ A big thank you to the Swaledale Road Runners who managed the finish and time-keeping.

“We have raised around £2,500 for charities and local good causes.
