WOMBLETON Wanderers won the Panasonic League Division Two Cup to complete a memorable league and cup double in their first-ever season.

The final, played at Thornton le Dale, was a very close game as Heslerton defended stoutly with Wombleton finding it difficult to break down a stubborn defence.

Wombleton took the lead on 37 minutes when a Tom Ellis’ corner from the left found Tim Sharples, who was left unmarked to score with a fine header.

In first-half stoppage time, Josh Tateson scored to double his side’s lead going into the interval.

In the second half, tempers frayed as Heslerton saw Jay Bryan and James Tiffney given their marching orders, while Wombleton substitute Jason Pearson was also dismissed.

Heslerton pulled a goal back with seven minutes left when Peter Tiffney scored a fine goal.

But just three minutes later, Wombleton’s Luke Tateson scored to restore his side’s two-goal advantage and give his side the double in their inaugural season.

Mick Norman, Heslerton ‘keeper and player/manager, was the man of the match.

To end his first season in management as runners-up in the cup competition is a huge credit to the vastly experienced ‘keeper.
