GUISBOROUGH TOWN brought the curtain down on a truly memorable season in scintillating style at the King George V Stadium on Saturday when they outplayed and outclassed newly-crowned Northern League Division 1 Champions Spennymoor Town to win 3-0.

It was a rousing finish to a week in which the Priorymen pulled off a hard fought 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the North Riding Senior Cup Final at the Riverside Stadium last Wednesday, The victory over Spennymoor lifted the Priorymen up to a final fourth position in the league table, their best ever performance in years.

After an end-to-end first 30 minutes with two excellent and very competitive sides pushing hard for the opening goal, it was Guisborough who took the lead with a goal from Mikey Roberts who shook off two defenders to turn and blast home his 46th goal of the season.

In the 52nd minute Guisborough went 2-0 up when a delightful inter-passing movement between their dynamic striking duo of Danny Johnson and Mikey Roberts was rounded off with Guisborough’s top striker Johnson slotting home a perfectly squared pass from the latter.

Spennymoor spurned a great chance to get back into the game when they were awarded a penalty but Guisborough goalkeeper Luke Coddington continued his brilliant recent form by diving to his right to save the spot kick. Guisborough resumed control and the only surprise was that it took until the 85th minute before they added further to their tally through Danny Johnson again to take his total goals scored this season to 59. Johnson took the Spennymoor goalkeeper by complete surprise when he unleashed a shot from 18 yards which flew into the net with the visiting keeper barely able to move.

After the final whistle, the Guisborough players celebrated by parading the North Senior Cup around the ground to applause from the 450 person crowd. Johnson has since had trials with Cardiff City and Middlesbrough.
