Chapman on a high in Class A

4:02pm Friday 9th May 2014

MIDDLESBROUGH DMC held their two-day Trial at the spectacular venue of Lordstone Cafe, high above the village of Carlton over the May Bank Holiday weekend and It was Middlesbrough's Barry Chapman who reigned supreme over the two days to win Class A with Richmond's Stephen Dennis topping a strong B class entry.

Blessed with great weather and a good entry of eighty riders survived the great outdoors for a night.

It was Guisborough's Steve Taylor who proved in fine form and the most consistent to lead on Saturday, remaining unpenalised over the last five sections, along with Graham Scott and Andy Gibson. Chapman lost out on the rocky gully of five and seven, three lost on each, allowing Mark Shearer and Scott into second and third and Leigh Smith to level with him overnight on six lost.

There was plenty of experience in the Class B entry and it was Paul Pulman – going well at present and pushing for a win – who set the bar with a score of five to lead from Stephen Dennis by one mark Dennis came back strong on Sunday to snatch the Class B win from Pulman. As Sunday dawned, riders climbed out of sleeping bags and into trials riders once again to attack the slippery glass like rocks of section five. Many marks were lost, especially in Class A.

Mark Jewell and Tom Cleasby hardly recognized the end cards when they arrived there. Taylor dropped back with six added. Chapman, refreshed and revitalised after a sound night's sleep, produced a solid ride here of two, along with Shearer..

THE Pickering club headed for Carlton, near Helmsley, on Monday to stage another easy trial for 28 competitors. The Cow House Bank venue accommodated the usual 11 section and six laps. Mark out was carried on Thursday when some rain was falling consequently on Sunday the ground was soft but David Brown and his team located to dry areas and avoided the soft wet areas.

Sections one and two moved round the banked hedge while three, four, five and 11 circled trees on undulating grass land. The sixth climbed the wallend with a steep ascent and descent. The steep climb at the seventh plucked a few marks from the lesser skilled riders but winner Mark Snowball cruised round with single mark penalties at the second, sixth, and ninth sections.

Phill Clough was right on the case then dropped marks in the eighth to tenth sections. Chris Dale seemed to arrive in the last yards and drop a boot down. Arthur Wylie ran off with the twin shock class riding his vintage Ossa finishing well clear of Tom Grant who was also Ossa mounted. Harrison Watkins is the hot boy in the youth class this year but Jack Darrell, nephew of East Yorks Centre allrounder Barrie Darrell certainly did impress. Another Darrell in the making? Pickering will run on June 15 at Kilburn with a start time of 11am.

GUISELEY electrical engineer James Noble crashed out of the Edinburgh Motor Club's annual International Pre-65 Trial at Kinlochleven on Saturday afternoon. The Yeadon-Guiseley Motor Club member lost control of his 500cc Ariel machine on the final section in the trial. He sustained a broken lower left leg and was taken to Fort William hospital initially but will undergo a operation in Inverness Hospital on Monday. Melmerby motor engineer Stuart Blythe won the Newcomer award riding a borrowed 260cc Triumph Cub machine.

He was placed sixth. Fellbeck farmer Norman Shepherd competed on his British James machine and was placed tenth.

LOTHERSDALE teenager Nathan Parker won the hard course class at the third Yeadon-Guiseley Motor Club's novice and beginners trial at Silsden on Saturday from Catterick Garrison novice Chris Laws. Fourteen Small Wheels competed on separate course where Silsden's Myles Hutchinson won the middle course class by a single penalty from Leyburn's Callum Fowler and Ravensthorpe youngster Monte Andrew. Elliott Laws rode the small wheels class, and won then competed in the beginner's class and won the Class C award. His sister Imogen was placed third in the small wheels easy course class.
