NORTHALLERTON Ladies battled to a 3-3 draw at home against Kingston-upon-Hull seconds on Sunday.

The home side went ahead after five minutes when Sarah Hope ran onto Hannah Chapman’s through ball, before calmly rounding the Hull goalkeeper to score from close range.

Hull soon hit back, equalising following a quick break, then taking the lead from a penalty corner.

Hull scored a third when a pass into the circle was judged to have touched the Northallerton ‘keeper Lisa Wayman.

Shortly before half-time Jo Robinson reacted the quickest to a looping-pass across the circle to power the ball into the goal.

Northallerton enjoyed good spells of possession in the second period, but Hull always looked dangerous on the break.

Wayman made some sharp reaction saves in goal, while defenders Carla Luck and Claire Chapman cleared their lines time and again.

Maggie Fenwick made the score 3-3 midway through the second half with a sweetlystruck shot from a penalty corner.

Northallerton pushed for a winning goal, but despite winning a string of penalty corners, Hull held out to ensure the points were shared.

The player of the match award was shared by Luck and Robinson.

Northallerton under 14 girls rounded off their season with some strong performances on Sunday, beating Wakefield thirds, drawing with City of York thirds, and narrowly losing to Leeds Adel seconds.

  • THIRSK were boosted when triple GB Olympian goalkeeper Simon Mason visited the club to pass on advice to Thirsk’s goalkeepers and coaches.

Simon said: “It was a very enjoyable session.

Thirsk has many keen and talented keepers. It is great to see a club investing its resources in their goalkeepers. Often they can be ignored, when they can be a team’s biggest assett.”

Simon also donated an autographed stick for the club’s fundraising family quiz on April 25 towards the forthcoming U14 girls and boys’ tour of Holland.

Meanwhile, Thirsk Men’s 2nds were on the end of a heavy defeat to a strong Airedale side who dominated from the start. Airedale struck six before Thirsk got one back. From there on in, despite an excellent hat-trick from Nick Edwards and a short-corner strike from Charlie Whitfield, Thirsk were outplayed, losing 13-4.

Thirsk Ladies were involved in a tough game against Hull University. Emma Frost got Thirsk off to a good start and Lizzie Biggard doubled their lead. The second half belonged to Hull who scored twice to earn a 2-2 draw.

Thirsk Ladies 2nds were also in action and were in dominant form against Slazengers thirds. They scored three times within the first ten minutes and three more before half-time.

Six more followed after half-time including four by Holly Oldham, bringing her season goals tally to 40. A great 12-0 victory with scorers Holly Oldham (4), Georgina Watkiss (2), Annabel Hill, Keira Morgan, Jo Lightfoot, Jo Frost and Anna Durkin. Player of the match was awarded to Izzy De Costa.

Thirsk Tornados were crowned champions at the weekend as they completed a fantastic season. Slazengers gave them a very tough final game, scoring first and putting Thirsk under pressure. Otis Williams drew them level and it was a very even game. Luke Brownlee made some outstanding saves keeping Thirsk in the match before Arthur Hunt managed to fire them in front. Harry Collinson secured the championship with a third for a 3-1 victory.

Thirsk U14 Bs were in action in a tough division. A 0-0 draw was hard fought in match one against Slazengers. Match two against Hull saw a 2-0 defeat but Thirsk had fought very hard with Oliver and Tom battling away and Olivia keeping well in goal. Finally, Bradford saw off Thirsk 5-0 but the scoreline didn’t reflect the excellent play of Thirsk making some great chances, with Shaun, Will, Harry and Ben all having good games. Olivia Barber was player of the match.
