CRAIG Hignett has left his position as assistant manager at Hartlepool United to return to his former club Middlesbrough.

The former Boro striker and Academy coach was Colin Cooper's right-hand man at Victoria Park after the pair were appointed in the summer.

But, with Boro yet to appoint an assistant manager since Aitor Karanka took over at the Riverside, Hignett will start work back at Rockliffe Park on Tuesday as the Spaniard's No 2.

A brief Pools statement read: "The Club wishes to advise that late this afternoon Assistant Manager Craig Hignett has handed in his notice.

"Middlesbrough Football Club have advised the Club's Chief Executive Russ Green that Craig will not be working his notice period for Hartlepool United and will be starting work at Middlesbrough on Tuesday, March 4.

"The Club has no further comment.''
