THE game of the day in Division One last Sunday saw leaders Broughton Hibs beaten for the first time this season, going down 4-2 at home to Henleys Athletic.

The visitors from Bedale arrived with an unbeaten record of their own and they led at the break thanks to a goal from Mark Hemingway.

Tom Keegan then struck twice in five minutes early in the second period to seal the points before Shaun Nolan made it 4-0. The Hibs rallied with late goals from Paul Storey and Brett Roberts but it was too late to save their unbeaten run, although they do remain top.

In-form Stoksley SC moved into the top four with a 6-1 thrashing of visitors Northallerton WMC. A first half brace from Callum Cuthbert put the hosts in control but Dan Baxter raised the Workies’ hopes with a goal three minutes into the second half. However, Lee Donachie and Jimmy Greening then sealed the points and it was no laughing matter for the Workies after that as Lee Evans struck a late brace to complete the scoring.

Kildale were also in the goals as they won 11-2 at Appleton Wiske. Matt Jones and Alex Brydon both scored for Appleton in the first half but Kildale were in fine form and eased to a comfortable victory.

Wayne Stephenson scored twice early on while Joe Marsey struck a five-goal salvo. Meanwhile Sam Sonley, Aaron Platt, Mark Lyons and Jamie Atkinson completed the rout.

Division Two leaders Topcliffe increased their advantage at the top of the table to five points as goals from Luke Burnett and Gareth Barber gave them a 2-0 victory at Osmotherley Rangers.

West Tanfield are up to second after an extraordinary 6-5 win over Cowtons, who began the day three points above them. Ed Howey gave Tanfield an early lead but Mark Forrest brought Cowtons level soon after. A penalty from Karol Ratajzak restored the Tanfield advantage after half an hour although Cowtons led at the break thanks to efforts from Andrew Hines and Nathan O’Connor. Duncan Terry chipped Tanfield level soon after the restart but Cowtons looked to have sealed the points with a second from O’Connor and a strike from Mark Sims. However, Rafal Kochanski put Tanfield back in it and they had the chance to draw level soon after when Ross McSherry was brought down in the area but Ratajzak blasted this spot kick high over the top. It did not prove too costly in the end though as Martin Mason made it 5-5 with ten minutes left before Kochanski won it in stoppage time.

AFC Beckside are third after a 5-3 home success against struggling Streetlam Farmers. Jamie Kirby scored twice in the first half for the visitors but goals from Scott Healey and Mark Swanwick made it 2-2 at the break.

Nigel Tallentine did head a third for the Farmers in the second half but Healey was on target again while a late brace from Andrew Blenkharn gave the Becksiders all three points.

Division Three leaders Brompton FC show no signs of slipping up as they made it eight wins out of eight at Knayton thanks to a first-half goal from Adam Wilson.

Bar One are their closest challengers but they remain nine points adrift despite a 7-2 victory at Masham. An early goal from Bar’s Ben Wood was all that separated the sides at the break but Richard Hammerton, Wood again and Dean Hill sealed the points by the hour.

Masham pulled a goal back through Miles Johnson, but Paul Humphreys, Wood, to complete his hat-trick, and Eddie Thornborough completed the scoring before Frank Kureca grabbed a late Masham consolation.

Farmers Arms are third after a 6-2 home victory over Jolly Minister. Despite going behind in the first half, Eddy Codd brought the Farmers level while a second half hattrick from Graham Love and further efforts from Michael Ingram and Adam Simpson sealed the points.

GLR Romanby and County Arms shared six goals in a thriller at Allertonshire School. Martin Larkin gave County an early lead but Steven Heaney brought GLR level by the break and Martin Sowerby put them ahead soon after. Steve Taggart then made it 2-2 on the hour but Christian Smith looked to have won it for Romanby with less than ten minutes left. However, there was still time for Liam Stockill to equalise for County and it finished 3-3.

The second round of the League Challenge Cup saw Travaux FC beat Blue Star 1-0 thanks to an early goal from Jon McGuigan, while elsewhere, Northallerton Police eased past second division Three Coopers 3-1. A goal from the Police’s Sam Vernalls was all that separated the sides at the break, although Graham Caygill had seen an effort cleared off the line, but Leon Roberts equalised for Coopers early in the second half. However, veteran striker Tony Hodgson rolled back the years with a superb finish from 25 yards to put the Police back in front before Ben Darville booked their place in the third round after a neat one-two on the edge of the area with Gary Shardha.

Ainderby SC are also through after seeing off the challenge of Division Three strugglers Masons Arms.

The tie was over before the break as a brace from Will Stevenson and further efforts from John Dolan, Jordan Owen and Kyle O’Gorman made it 5-0. Masons rallied in the second half as Adrian Tennant and Dave Tennant both found the target but Stevenson had the final say by completing his hattrick ten minutes from time.
