Northallerton leave it late in cup tie

AN injury-time penalty from Northallerton substitute Chris Dickinson completed a late Town comeback in the second round of the Brooks Mileson League Challenge Cup on Wednesday of last week.

Having been uninspired for the best part of 75 minutes, Town finally clicked into gear in the closing stages to see off the challenge of struggling Whickham at the RGPS.

Whickham, who had failed to win in their previous ten matches, grabbed a lead inside 20 minutes. Stuart Dunn brought down winger Aberbaker Salim just outside the penalty area and Jordan Lartey’s free kick somehow found its way past Craggs and into the far corner of the net.

But Town saved themselves from an early exit with just seven minutes remaining.

Gavin Parkin’s superb through ball sent Colin Anderson clear in the inside right channel and held off defender Mark Pattison before lifting the ball over the advancing Cresswell from ten yards. The winner finally arrived in the third minute of stoppage time when Anderson was tripped in the area by Craig Cavanagh and Dickinson stepped up to fire a penalty past Cresswell with virtually the last kick.

  • Northallerton’s league match at Whickham on Saturday was postponed due to snow.
