MR Robotham’s letter (D&S Times, August 25) has provided some very useful ideas for tackling the problem of housing provision in the UK.
We need a comprehensive and constructive approach to solving a very serious problem.
Let’s not forget that the financial crisis of 2008 began with problems in the American housing market.
We could take action now on some of Mr Rowbotham’s points.
For example, years ago the Scottish Parliament increased rates on second homes, and abolished ground rents (feu duties). Westminster could do the same, for starters.
The trouble is that no-one in Westminster will grasp the nettle - no ideas, no co-ordination, no policy, no urgency.
Much wringing of hands but no action. It will need courage, but it must be done.
