OUT with the old, Inn with the new.

Whilst we have not lived in Thirsk for a couple of years, we have remained regular visitors to the town and The Golden Fleece, where we have enjoyed many celebrations, as well as sharing support for the bereaved at funeral teas.

We have dined there, stayed there and put friends up there, and had coffee on numerous occasions.

What was always apparent was the warm welcome given to everyone.

Older people as your article (D&S Times, June 30) states, but also young people, children and visitors with pets, tourists and locals, all part of that long tradition of the hostelry.

There was nothing fancy or expensive in terms of food and furnishings, genuine, authentic shabby chic, you may say, but all that was provided was homely and good value for money. The Fleece’s philosophy has stood the test of time as a community hotel serving the needs of the town, and was often very busy, as recently as the end of 2015, just before it was taken over.

We wish the new incarnation every success, and we are sure that it will attract a new clientele, and refresh the town centre. However, the proof will be how well it performs over time, as other such businesses have come and gone in the town, and as your photos showed, it may not always even now, be that busy.

We just trust that it will continue the tradition of welcome, community engagement and support and be an honourable child of the old Fleece.
