REFERENCE the article (D&S Times June 23) - parents complaining about the cost of school uniforms.

I attended Richmond High School in the 1950s and our uniforms had to bought at Robson and Wood in Richmond. The material for our summer dresses was specially manufactured for our school. A dressmaker had to be paid to make them if mum wasn’t handy with a sewing machine - this worked out very expensive.

My only new clothing was a blazer, a gaberdine mackintosh, indoor and outdoor shoes. There was always a supply of second-hand uniforms available to buy as people couldn’t afford to throw them out like nowadays.

Miss Thornton was a stickler for correct tidy dress - nobody protested.
