I AM very surprised and disappointed that there haven’t been more people expressing concern about the amount of development - current and proposed in this area.

Here is a quotation from someone who does care: “You have in this country the most comely, the most parklike, the most flawlessly composed countryside the world has ever known, a product of centuries of tireless, instinctive improvement, and you are half a generation from destroying most of it forever.”

Who wrote this? Bill Bryson (born in the USA) in his book Notes From A Small Island. Black Swan 1996.

The editorial (D&S Times, June 9) does touch on this issue although from a different angle, and isn’t it ironic that on the same pages there are three photos of delicious North Yorkshire views.

When green fields surrender to the bulldozer are they ever going to be green again? Isn’t it time that we as a country joined up the dots before it’s too late?

There probably are people who share my views but perhaps in anticipation of a deluge of “name-calling” they would prefer to keep their heads down. I’ve popped my head up, I’m with Bill Bryson. Anyone?
