Sir, – I was sorry to read that the county council is unable to help Masham Parish Council with the cost of providing signs on the A1M to their township (D&S, April 20).

However, I see that the council found money a couple of weeks ago to erect four, completely unnecessary signs on the A6108 road between Leyburn and the junction at the top of Bellerby Bank warning of a “new” road surface. The road surface was renewed between Leyburn and Bellerby and patched between Bellerby and the top of the bank some months ago now.

This also begs some questions. When will the surface cease to be new? Once it stops being new will the signs be taken down? Why does the council use such dangerous materials that drivers have to be warned about it in the first place?

On a totally unrelated matter and just in case my bishop reads the D&S, I belong to the East Witton Male Voice Choir and not the Vice Choir, whose concert was advertised in the Leyburn Town & Village section last week.

Rev JONATHAN OLDFIELD St Mary’s Mount, Leyburn.
