Sir, – Could I remind all walkers, especially with dogs, that at this time of year cows with calves can be very aggressive. I was injured in the face using a bridlepath on Monday when a herd of about 20 cattle decided to charge my wife, myself and our dog.
The herd was not visible when we entered the field and as soon as we spotted them we moved as far away as possible, to no avail. At no time did our dog show any antagonism towards the herd, even when being chased himself. I received a head butt to the face and both of us are lucky that we didn’t trip in the race to escape.
Only my wife’s screams stopped her being crushed against a gate, I believe.
While it would be great if farmers kept dangerous animals away from public rights of way, walkers should be aware that some do not. If in doubt, don’t use that path.
