Memorial garden dedicated to much-loved headteacher
A MEMORIAL garden has been dedicated to a popular teacher who died suddenly earlier this year.
The Rev Rachel Parkinson conducted the ceremony in the grounds of Broomfield Primary School, Northallerton.
The garden was developed in memory of Heather Thom, who was headteacher of the school for 21 years. She died at her home in Brompton on Swale, near Richmond, in February, following a short illness.
Miss Thom was previously head of Middleton Tyas Church of England Primary School and had taught in Great Ayton.
Parents, staff and children donated money and raised funds to create the memorial garden.
An enclosed seating area and planters have been installed, along with a large wooden chair from which staff will read to pupils. Heathers will be planted in the garden to reflect Miss Thom's Scottish heritage and name.
Organisers were delighted that most of the work was completed before the end of term, so that year six pupils, who left yesterday to go to secondary school in September, could attend the dedication ceremony.
Assistant headteacher Audrey Smith, who worked with Miss Thom for 21 years, said: "After Heather died, we were all extremely touched by the messages of condolence and support from the school community and far beyond.
"Many people asked about ways they might contribute to something in her memory, and we think the garden will be a fitting tribute to her."
Acting headteacher David Bellett said: "I am delighted to have been involved with helping to commemorate Miss Thom, who was a very special individual who gave so much to this school."
Sue Gill has been appointed to the headship and will take up her post in September.
Earlier this year, pupils on the school council organised a bring and buy sale which raised more than £300 for Great Ormond Street Hospital, a charity which Miss Thom supported. The hospital also received money donated by mourners at her funeral.
* A summer fete on June 21, organised by the Friends of Broomfield School, raised almost £2,600 towards outdoor play equipment and other items for the school.
