A PROMISING young athlete is preparing to take a shot at glory in a competition showcasing the talent of the country's up-and-coming sports stars.

Shot-putter Scott Lincoln, a student at Northallerton College, North Yorkshire, has reached this month's English Schools' Athletic Association's national championships.

This year's event, the 78th , is being staged at the International Stadium, in Gateshead - and Scott is looking forward to his debut appearance.

The 15-year-old, from Brompton, near Northallerton, claimed his place in the finals with an impressive performance at the North Yorkshire county track and field event, held in York last month.

He had already won a local area tournament to progress to the county finals, where his throw of 12.98m was enough to send him to the national showdown.

Scott said: "It's really exciting. I was delighted to get through to the county event, but now to be going to the English schools' finals is fantastic.

"I know I'm going to be up against some really tough opposition from throughout the country, but I'll literally be giving it my best shot."

Anna Harvey, joint head of PE at the College, said: "It's brilliant to have someone flying the flag for Northallerton College at such a major event. Scott has performed outstandingly well and thoroughly deserves his place on such a big stage."
