Cricket club bowled over with new home

A RURAL cricket club has moved to a new ground for the start of the season, thanks to 15,000-worth of grants.

Leake Cricket Club has moved to the Hillside Rural Activities Park, near Knayton, to play its games.

The club has a new pavilion, paid for with a grant of 10,000 from Awards for All and 5,000 from Hambleton District Council.

The club played its first home game at the ground in the Northallerton and District Evening League recently.

A European regional development grant paid for the club's new pitch, which saw its first action last week.

Leake hosted Northallerton Rugby Club for the ground's first home fixture, which was won by the visitors.

Specialist clay was brought in from Kettering to ensure the club's new pitch was of the required standard.

A spokesman for the activities park said: "We have been working hard over the last few weeks to fit out the pavilion in readiness for the season."

The activities park cost 450,000 and the 28-acre site is the permanent base for Borrowby Show.

It also houses Knayton Football Club and a children's play area.

Former Newcastle Falcons rugby star Liam Botham will officially open the activities site on June 22.
