Golfer Charlie, 4, aims to emulate Tiger

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy has become a golf club's youngest ever member.

Charlie Andrews has been signed up as a junior member of Romanby Golf and Country Club, near Northallerton.

Tiger Woods, arguably the greatest golfer of all time, began playing the sport at about the same age as Charlie, whose family and friends have high hopes that the youngster could one day emulate the American.

Charlie started playing with plastic clubs in the back garden of his home in Romanby, at the age of 18 months.

His father, Dave Andrews, said Charlie had been hooked on golf ever since.

He said: "Whenever Charlie knew that I was going to the golf club to practise, he would pester me to let him come. I never pushed him into joining me, as he loves it so much.

"He just picked up a club and he has hit the balls with no trouble at all ever since.

"We have now been coming up to the range and the course for about two years.

"I now felt that it's the right time to take up the junior membership for Charlie at the club, which I'm very pleased with."

The club, which has about 500 members, caters for all ages and levels of golfers.

Richard Boucher, the club's marketing manager, said: "It's a great pleasure to welcome Charlie into the club.

"Dave has been a member here since day one, some 15 years ago, so it's great that we are carrying on with the family tradition.

"We have got a thriving junior section at the club that last year won the Thirsk Trophy.

"I hope that, one day, Charlie will become part of the future successful junior teams here at Romanby.

"Charlie is a really nice lad. He is good at putting, and is still learning the game from his dad.

"Maybe one day he will become as good as Tiger Woods. Who knows?"
