Lifeboat crew honoured for Whitby rescue bid

LIFEBOAT crew members have been honoured for their attempts to save the lives of three people in a capsized pleasure boat.

Andrew Carrick, his partner Jill Russell, and his brother, John Carrick, died after their 22ft cabin cruiser overturned at the mouth of Whitby harbour in November.

Staff at Whitby RNLI lifeboat station spotted the boat, Last Call, attempting to leave the harbour in a force eight gale. They tried to warn the crew not to go to sea using the radio.

When this failed, they launched the all-weather lifeboat. The cabin cruiser overturned moments later.

Battling through 5m high waves, the lifeboat crew quickly found the two men. Andrew Carrick, 45, and John, 36, from Middlesbrough, were pulled from the water 100yds from West Pier.

A large wave broke over the lifeboat during the recovery.

Crew members Mark Frankland and Shaun Elwick were totally immersed while holding one of the men, but still managed to retain their grip. Attempts were made to resuscitate the men, but both later died in hospital.

Miss Russell, 48, was picked up from the sea by an RAF Sea King helicopter.

She was taken to the James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, but died shortly afterwards.

The lifeboat crew was this week presented with a framed letter of thanks from RNLI chairman, Sir Jock Slater. The award recognised the "initiative, teamwork and professionalism" of the crew.

Sir Jock said in the letter: "The actions of the Whitby lifeboat station personnel involved in this incident were swift and professional.

"This was a service with a sad result, but conducted in effective co-operation with all those involved and in the best traditions of the RNLI."

Whitby RNLI lifeboat operations manager, Roy Weatherill, said: "I am sure that none of us will ever forget this tragic incident, during which Whitby's RNLI crew, along with the RAF, air ambulance, coastguard and harbour staff, did everything they could to save the lives of these three people.

"We are all very pleased that our efforts are being recognised with the award of this letter."
