A POLISH boy who could not speak any English three years ago has won a school prize.

Przemek Niedzialkowski, 11, won Pickhill Primary School’s Endeavour Award for his efforts and was presented with the shield at his leavers’ service at All Saints’ Church, Pickhill. The shield was provided by Thirsk Rotary Club.

Przemek arrived in 2007 with his mother, Wiesla, father, Pawel, and brother, Kacper, eight, from the village of Zadusniki in Poland.

Since arriving in Swainby, near Pickhill, Przemek has quickly learned English and settled in with his classmates.

Headteacher Christine Gabbott said: “Przemek’s involvement in school life and with the football team has been tremendous.”

Mrs Gabbott added that Przemek had achieved level four in literacy, the average for English 11-yearolds, in one of his Sats tests.

Przemek will start at Thirsk School and Sixth Form College in September.
