A MAN was in a critical condition after suffering serious head injuries after he was struck by a lorry on the A1.
The injured man was struck on the southbound A1 one mile south of Catterick, in North Yorkshire, around 11.50am on Monday, March 15.
He was taken to James Cook Hospital, Middlesbrough, by the Great North Air Ambulance, after he had been treated at the scene.
The 49-year-old man is from the Richmond area but there were no details released of how the crash took place.
An air ambulance spokesman said: "He suffered severe head injuries and he was anaesthetised by a paramedic and then we took him to hospital."
The southbound A1 carriageway was completely closed at Scotch Corner and Catterick South due to the accident.
Diversions were put in place to send traffic onto the A19 away from the area.
The police are appealing for witnesses to the crash to come forward to help the investigation.
They are also keen to talk to anyone who saw a small silver hatchback parked in the lay-by near the Kirby Fleetham junction.
Anyone with any information that could help police inquiries should contact traffic sergeant John Lumbard, of Richmond Road Policing Group, on 0845-6060-247.
