Wildlife sanctuary plan for North Yorks Moors set to be refused

A WILDLIFE rescuer who has local support for an animal sanctuary is set to try to gain approval for his plan again despite planning officer’s protests.

Jim Ward aims to create a wildlife rescue centre with portable aviaries on the North York Moors near to Fylingdales.

His plan, part of which is retrospective, is to build on farmland at Springhill Farm in the North York Moors National Park.

Many residents living in nearby Scarborough and Whitby support the scheme.

Both North Yorkshire Police and Scarborough Borough Council have told the park’s planners that they have used Mr Ward’s service regularly.

They add that they have found his work to be a valuable asset to the area when animals in distress need rescuing.

Fylingdales Parish Council supports the application as does a local Royal Society for the Protection of Birds member.

Mr Ward, of Scarborough, has been doing animal rescue work for the last 30 years.

He said: "We have done all that the national park planners have asked us to do and we’ll just leave it up to them now.

"If we don’t get approval then I will have to discuss the next step with my partner but we’re just carrying on with our work."

Despite this backing the park’s planners are against the scheme and recommend its refusal.

Val Dilcock, the park authority's chief planning officer, states in a report to the committee why they are against it.

Her report states that officers are sympathetic to the plan but that it might not fall within the Local Development Framework.

Her notes add that officers believe the plan is contrary to the local development framework and could cause damage to the qualities of the park.

The plan, deferred from June’s meeting, is on the agenda for a planning committee meeting in the park, on Thursday, July 16.
