Council asks residents to pledge one small change

A COUNCIL is to launch its plans to become more environmentally friendly as part of climate change week.

Hambleton District Council will ask residents to pledge to change one thing in the way they go about their lives over the next 12 months, whether it is to walk to work once a week, change to energy efficient light bulbs or recycle waste.

The pledge scheme will be launched on Monday at the start of Small Change, Big Difference week, organised by the Local Government Association to highlight the need to fight climate change.

Councillor Bob Baker said: "We are already dealing with issues within council buildings but we also want to help our residents tackle climate change in their homes – we have a number of grants available to help save energy. "It is vital we all take action to reduce our carbon footprints and tackle climate change."

As part of Small Change week the Energy Saving Trust is holding free drop-in events to offer residents information on energy saving in the home, renewable technologies and smarter driving tips.

The events are taking place from 11am-2pm at the council offices, Stone cross, Northallerton, Monday, July 13; Bedale Leisure Centre, Tuesday, July 14; Thirsk Leisure Centre, Wednesday, July 15 (noon–3pm); Easingwold council offices, Thursday, July 16, and Stokesley council offices, Friday, July 17.

Residents can show their support - and make a pledge - by completing an online poll at www.hambleton.gov.uk
