June 4, 2001 16:33: YOUNGSTERS at Lewisham Hospital got a lesson in safety from a new all-girl band, Charli.

The group have become the newest patrons of the Lewisham Safe Kids campaign and while there performed their debut single, Big Mistake, as well as specially-written song Safe Kids.

During their visit, the group, from south London, performed for youngsters on the children's medical and surgical wards, before giving away goodies and signing autographs.

Charli's Laura Parkes, who is a former L'Oreal hair model, said: "If we can use our music to help get this important message across, that's great."

The five-strong band, who have appeared at various under-18 events and clubs and already have a loyal following, are due to release their first video this month.

Safe Kids development officer Mike Pemberton said: "We have already got some wonderful patrons.

"Getting Charli on board is a fantastic boost for our campaign. They will appeal to the very people we are trying to get our message across to."

The campaign aims to reduce childhood injury by 25 per cent over the next nine years while promoting healthy activities.
