Carmel College student Adam Brown took the honours in the senior boys’ 200m, his first competitive outing since having his appendix removed last month.
The 14-year-old is the fastest in town with a 12 second 100m and in the field holds the county record for his age for shot with a distance of 12.6m. He also plays No8 or centre for Mowden Park Rugby Club.

“I love my sport but about a month ago I could feel my insides getting tighter and tighter,” said the Year 9 student.
“Eventually I had to have my appendix out and this is the first time I have raced since, so I am really pleased to have won.”
Adam’s feat was among a number of impressive performances as Carmel College staged its annual sports day for Year 7-10 students.
In the junior boys 300m Joshua Irving knocked an incredible 3.6 seconds off a college record that had stood for two years.

“I was really tired at the end but thrilled to break the record so emphatically,” said the 12-year-old, who would love to compete at the Olympics one day.
In the house competition the junior boys’ and girls’ contests were won by St Cuthbert, while St Bede’s took the senior girls’ and St Aidan’s the upper girls’ accolade. Overall the house cup went to St Aidan’s, which pushed St Cuthbert’s into second place by just seven points.
Principal Maura Regan said: “There have been some tremendous performances but the most impressive element for me was the level of effort all the students exhibited regardless of their abilities.
“Sports day captures perfectly the spirit of the college and it was great to see the rest of our students cheering the athletes on so enthusiastically.”
