A GROUP of scientists have been to East Durham College to show students what is behind the beauty products on the shelves.

Beauty by the Geeks, based in Newcastle University, spent two days with students from different areas of the college, including Peter Jones Enterprise Students, East Durham Sixth Form Applied Science students, and Hair & Beauty students, talking through a number of different areas.

The team spoke to students about the science behind hair and beauty products, showing students how to mix their own products and also the business behind them.

Beauty by the Geeks co-founder, Rosie Brown said: “Our educational courses aim to engage students in a new, exciting way and promote Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (Stem) at a higher level, highlighting the diversity of Stem careers.

“We try to show that there’s much more to science than chemistry, biology and physics than what we see in the classroom. In our workshops we teach students how to make cosmetic products whilst explaining the science behind them.

“We make sure the workshops not only illustrate the principles of cosmetic science principles but act to support the science curriculum in an engaging way.”

Jacky Owens head of East Durham College’s Sixth Form, ED6, said: “The sessions put on were really informative and all the different departments that took part were able to take away something from the sessions.

“All the students were really interested in everything that went on behind the scenes in the hair and beauty industry, and gave them a new outlook on science and the types of ways science is used in industry.”
