NEWCASTLE is the region’s best university according to a new student experience survey.

The Times Higher Education (THE) Student Experience Survey rated Bath as the UK’s top university, replacing last year’s winner Sheffield at the top of the pile.

In this region, Newcastle was the highest ranked – at tenth, up from joint 16th last year.

Durham, however, dropped out of the top ten – falling from 8th to 20th.

York jumped from 37th to joint 22nd and Teesside rose from 49th to joint 42nd, but Northumbria fell from 21st to joint 31st, York St John dropped from joint 35th to 58th and Sunderland dropped one place to 60th.

Newcastle was ranked third for the quality of its staff and lectures and joint third for its cheap shops, bars and amenities, equal with Durham.

York was joint ninth for staff and lecture quality and Teesside was joint sixth for cheap bars, shops and amenities.

None of this region’s universities were named in the top ten for the quality of their facilities or industry connections.

The survey is in its tenth year and almost 14,700 full-time undergraduates were polled.
