THE official opening has been held today of the new multi-million pound Department for Education offices in Darlington town centre.
Construction on the building started in December 2013 after a campaign was launched to save more than 400 jobs at the town’s Mowden Hall when the DfE announced plans to move staff to Newcastle.
The campaign saw The Northern Echo joining forces with Darlington Borough Council, the town's MP Jenny Chapman, union officials and politicans of all parties to save the jobs.
The result of the campaign was that Darlington Borough Council was able to complete an innovative deal with the government to build the office block at the back of the town hall.
Council leader Bill Dixon said at today's opening: "This has been a shining example olf collaborative working and, hopefully, there is more to come from this partnership."
Jenny Chapman described it as a "very good day for Darlington".
