STOCKTON welcomed two Second World War veterans on Friday to lead its 70th anniversary commemorations of VE Day.
A special beacon lighting ceremony took place on Stockton High Street this evening.
The service included readings from 95-year-old Fred Lakelock from Thornaby, a local cadet and Denis Grubb, Chair of the Billingham branch of the Royal British Legion.
A one minute silence was held before 93-year-old Jack Chapman from Fairfield lit a commemorative beacon.
Mayor of Stockton, Councillor Barbara Inman, said: “On May 8, 70 years ago, nearly six years of war across Europe came to an end.
"It is important that we continue to reflect on those events which have had a huge impact on our lives today so everyone is welcome to come to Stockton Town Centre on Friday evening to join us in commemorating this significant anniversary.”
As the event came to a close the town's street lighting, river lighting and fountain became red, white and blue to represent the Union Jack.
Representatives from the Royal British Legion, local cadets and Armed Forces motorcycle riders took part.
