PLANS to build a further 550 homes on the edge of the North-East’s largest housing estate have been referred to Eric Pickles for a decision.
Stockton Borough Council turned down plans to build 500 homes on green wedge land on the edge of Ingleby Barwick unanimously in February.
But the decision has now been called in by local government secretary Mr Pickles for determination after an appeal by the developer.
An application to build a free school and 350 homes on a neighbouring green site was approved by him after Stockton South MP James Wharton appealed to him last year.
Opponents, including Labour candidate for Stockton South Louise Baldock, say Ingleby Barwick is “creaking at the seams” and cannot take any more homes.
