TEENAGERS will be taught in small primary-school style units inside a new comprehensive being built in Stockton.

At Grangefield Academy pupils in each year group will have their own set of teachers and will spend most of their school day in the same few classrooms.

“This type of approach delivers proven results and is ideal for creating consistency and stability within the school day.

“It allows students to develop a greater sense of ownership about their school and to build strong relationships with the same teachers throughout their school career so that academic progress can be more easily evaluated.

“We are very excited about the possibilities for raising educational standards across the board with this approach,” said Shelagh Potter, principal of Grangefield Academy, formerly Grangefield School and Technology College.

The Grangefield Academy established in January is sponsored by the Northern Education Trust, a not-for-profit multi-academy trust which sponsors a range of primary and secondary schools in the North-East North-West of England, including four other academies in Stockton.

Drawings submitted for planning consent to Stockton Borough Council can be viewed by the public on Monday, March 24, from 12pm to 8pm in the media centre, which is the former CLC building at Grangefield School on Oxbridge Avenue.

If approval is granted, building work by Keir Group contractors is due to start later this year with the new academy expected to open its doors in September 2015.
