NEW training gets under way this week aimed at people who would like to volunteer for Middlesbrough Council.

The five-week ‘Ready to Volunteer’ Course is delivered by Community Learning on Wednesdays from 9.30am to 11.30am from April 30.

The authority has developed its own volunteer support programme in response to cuts to the public sector which are leading to fundamental changes in the funding available for local services and the way they are delivered.

Sharon Barker, the council’s voluntary sector liaison officer, said: “Volunteers make a great difference to the organisations and communities they work with, and in turn they stand to gain a great deal.

“Although there are signs of economic recovery, the jobs market is still fiercely competitive, and employers are looking for candidates who really stand out.

“That’s why volunteering can really make a difference, giving those who make the effort good, relevant vocational experience to add to academic qualifications.”

The council already has more than 600 volunteers, ranging from those who contribute a few hours a month to those volunteering regularly and helping to deliver services – and is currently recruiting in a number of areas.
